June 18, 2015 driving to the Norsland Village at L'Anse aux Meadows
A typical garden in the road ditch. The gardens are rows of peat with ditches between the rows. Most of the soil in the area is peat where it isn't rock.
Oh, my!! I see a moose next to the road.
And more stacks of wood...
This is a scene that the Norsman would see from their village.
John at the doorway of the slave quarters. The walls are 6 feet thick: 2 feet peat blocks, 2 feet rock and sand,2 feet peat blocks.
John inside the smoke house next to the billows.
The sod huts and other buildings in the village.
The main living space. The sleeping quarters are at one end.
Outside was an aboriginal stone cooking well.
The village and surroundings from a distance. Notice the period character walking near the fence.
